Roger Federer suffered a jolt 3-6 6-4 3-6 6-4 6-2 defeat at the hands of Grigor Dimitrov.
The Grand Slam winner’d seemed destined for a against Rafael Nadal in what would have been the rivals’ first meeting in Flushing Meadows.
But Bulgarian Dimitrov tore up this script with success on the Swiss, who appeared out of sorts throughout a five-set defeat, hitting at 60 unforced mistakes and needed a medical time-out.
Dimitrov had obtained just two sets him off, and hadn’t beaten Federer in some of the seven games.
In the last four, Daniil Medvedev, who knocked out Stan Wawrinka to reach his first Grand Slam semi will be faced by Dimitrov.
