The Nuts and Bolts of an Over/Under (Totals) Bet

An over/under (totals bet) is a sports betting wager which allows you to bet on the flow of a game entirely independent from who wins the game. As the name suggests, you’re going to bet on the entire number of something which happens in a game. Mostly, this is going to be the points, runs, or goals scored, but it may be other things.

This entire number will be wholly independent of the results of the game. That means it does not matter who wins the game. All that matters is the number of points, runs, or goals are scored by both groups.

If you’re still confused, that’s fine. When we look at a few instances, you’ll realize how easy this wager would be to understand.

Let’s look at an NFL football game as an example. Let’s say that the Washington Redskins are enjoying the Denver Broncos. The first thing the sportsbook will perform in this game is to attempt to predict that the winner will be, and they’re going to predict what they think the final score is. Let’s say They predict that the Broncos Will win, and the final score will be the following:

Washington Redskins 17
Denver Broncos 24
From this, the casino is going to create the over/under wager for the game. The over/under will be a bet on the number of total points are going to be scored by both groups. Since the sportsbook believes the final score will be 24-17, they think the total points scored should be 41.

They’ll now give you the capability to wager either over 41 points or below 41 points. Should you take the above, you’ll be betting that MORE than 41 points will be scored in the sport. Should you take the below, you will be gambling that LESS than 41 points will be scored in the game.

Now, it does not matter which team scores the points. If you choose to bet the over along with the Redskins win 42-0, you will win your bet. If the Broncos win 42-0, you still win your wager. It does not matter what combination of points gets you across the 41 mark. Provided that more than 41 points are scored in the match, the over will win. When you make a totals bet, you could not care less that team wins the match.

Should you bet the above, you’re hoping for a high-scoring game. Should you bet the beneath, you’re hoping for a defensive stalemate that keeps the score reduced and beneath the threshold which you gamble.
Now, you may be asking what happens if precisely 41 points have been scored. If exactly 41 total points have been scored in this match, both bets would be a tie. All bets would be returnedand you wouldn’t win or lose some money. Because of this, you will often find the totals line set in a half-point mark. So, instead of 41, you might see 41.5 or 40.5 online. This helps to ensure that there’ll be no ties.

This is all there is to some totals bet! The sportsbook will put the lineup, after which you bet whether you feel the total number of that occurrence will be under the line they set. The most popular totals bets are scores of matches. Moreover, you can bet on the total occurrences of other random things. For instance, you can bet on the entire number of birdies at a golf tournament or the total number of passes a QB will throw. Pretty much any stat which can be totaled up is fair game when it comes to over/under bets. Everything comes down to how much variety the sportsbook wishes to provide on a particular match or game.
