In recent years, the WTA Madrid Open has belonged to Petra Klikova or Simona Halep.
Last year kvitova won. That ended the two-year reign of Halep as champion. Kvitova was the 2015 Madrid Open champion.One of either Kvitova or Halep has emerged in each of the last five Madrid finals. Halep is the third seed of the tournament. Defending champ Kvitova is slotted in as the no. 5 seed.Kvitova is the queen of the court in Madrid. She has been champion that there a record three times, with wins in 2011, 2015 and 2018.
In 2017 as seed, she dropped to unseeded Anastasija Sevastova in the quarterfinals. Seeded fifth in 2016 coming from her previous Madrid title, Kvitova dropped in third-round play to Daria Gavrilova, also an unseeded player.
Halep and Serena Williams (2012-13) will be the only players to successfully defend their title in the Madrid Open. Halep (2014-16) is the only player to reach successive Madrid finals.
Supposed Halep won in Madrid and world no. 1 Naomi Osaka of Japan did not reach the semifinals. Halep would then recover the spot as top player in women’s tennis. But if the shape charts hold throughout the draw, Halep and Osaka are destined to clash in the semifinals.
T will be all or nothing with her at Madrid, though. In between her names, Kvitova has stumbled.
